The Guilford College baseball team welcomed Averett University to McBane Field for a late season conference matchup. The Quakers claimed the game 7-3 for their eighth-straight victory.
Averett got on the board in the opening frame with an RBI single to center field. The Cougars held the advantage until the bottom of the second when
Colin Smith hit a two-run home run over the left field wall.Â
The Cougars tied the game in the third and eventually reclaimed the lead in the fourth, 3-2. The Quakers responded in its half of the fourth when
Jordan Burrough lifted a ball into left field that allowed
Chase Wade to tag from third.
In the fifth inning,
Michael Sumner singled down the left field line to plate
Bryce Vestal. The next inning, the hosts continued its stretch when
Nick Boles hit a sacrifice fly to bring home
Colin Smith.
Vestal kept the run streak going with a double off the right center fence as Burrough scored. Leading 6-3,
Isaiah Hairston drove in the final run of the game with a single to left center.
Reese Baker picked up the win as he pitched 2.2 scoreless innings in relief.
Jacob Phillips started on the mound, going 4.1 innings with three runs (all earned) on seven hits.
Izaac McGuire and
Ty Clark also tossed scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Guilford wraps up play at home on Saturday, April 22 against Bridgewater College on Senior Day. Game one is set for 12:00 p.m.
