The Guilford College baseball team looked to extend its winning streak and complete the season sweep of Eastern Mennonite University. The Quakers were able to accomplish both goals with a 15-7 win over the Royals.
Both sides did not find much success in the beginning of the game until the bottom of the third. Eastern Mennonite scored two runs in the inning on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.
Trailing 2-0, Guilford looked to respond in the next inning. After a Grayson Tudor triple, Chase Wade grounded out to score Tudor. Following a Jordan Burrough walk, Nick Boles drove a ball over the left field wall for the two-run homer.
The Quakers possessed the 3-2 lead when they looked to expand it in the fifth. The visitors put together a six-run inning, using four hits, two hit by pitch and a walk. GC led 9-2 going to the sixth inning.
Guilford kept the scoring stretch going as Isaiah Hairston scored on a Tudor sacrifice fly to center field. Following another Quaker run, the Royals scored three runs on three hits in the seventh to pull within six (11-5).
The Quakers answered the home team in the eighth with four runs on four hits with RBI hits from
Michael Sumner and Hairston. In the bottom half of the frame, EMU scored two more additional runs.Â
After coming in with one out in the eighth, Logan Dodson held the hosts to just one hit over the final 1.2 innings to secure the eight-run victory.
Hairston finished the day 4-6 from the plate as he scored twice and drove in two more runs. Tudor joined the hit parade, going 3-4 with two RBI and three runs.
Jackson Marcellus started on the mound and threw five innings in the win. He allowed just two runs (all earned) on five hits.Â
Guilford ventures back to McBane Field on Wednesday, April 19 to face Averett University. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
