The Guilford College baseball team traveled into central Virginia to take on the Eastern Mennonite University Royals. After trailing for most of the game, the Quakers rallied to upend the Royals, 6-5.
In the first inning, Eastern Mennonite opened the scoring with an RBI single through the left side. The hosts added two more runs to lead 3-0.
Both teams were held scoreless until the third when the hosts added another run. Neither side scored through the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth, Guilford got on the board with a three-run homer off the bat of
Rylan Smith. The Royals extended their lead back to two (5-3) with an RBI single.Â
The Quakers trailed by two until the top of the eighth as
Nick Boles singled to left field as
Allden Horne and
Rylan Smith scored to even the score at five.
After a scoreless inning from EMU, Guilford looked to take the lead.
Rylan Smith delievered such a hit with a double as
Michael Sumner crossed home plate.
Ty Clark, who entered in the seventh inning, held the hosts to just one hit in the ninth to secure the win.
Rylan Smith led the team with two hits, runs and four RBI. Clark picked up the win, throwing the final three innings with no runs and just three hits.
Guilford looks to take the season series against Eastern Mennonite on Sunday, April 16. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
