GC Splits Conference Opener

The Guilford College baseball team took on the Generals of Washington and Lee University in the first Old Dominion Athletic Conference battle of the season. The Quakers earn a split as they captured game one, 5-1, before falling 11-8 in game two.

Game 1: Guilford, 5, Washington and Lee 1

After a scoreless first for both teams, it was Guilford that struck first. With two outs, Chase Wade was hit by a pitch and then moved up on a wild pitch. The ensuing at-bat, Carter Blum reached on an error that allowed Wade to score.

Next at-bat, Nick Boles reached on a throwing error as Blum was able to score all the way from first.

Leading 2-0, Blum added to the advantage with an RBI single to center field to plate Wade in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth, the Quakers kept the momentum going as Colin Smith doubled to left center to bring home Rylan Smith and Isaiah Hairston.

Washington and Lee scored one in the ninth but Wade closed out the game and the win.

Jacob Ray picked up the win, going six innings and only allowed one hit with four strikeouts. Wade earned the save, throwing the final three innings with two hits and one earned run.

Game 2: Washington and Lee 11, Guilford 8

In game two, the Generals wasted little time with a two-run homer in the second at-bat. WLU added another with an RBI double.

The bottom half of the first, Guilford responded as it scored three runs on a fielding error. In the second, the Generals hit another two-run homer to capture a 5-3 edge.

The Quakers cut the difference back to one in the fourth as Wade singled through the left side to bring home Rylan Smith.

Washington and Lee took over the momentum as it scored two in the fifth, sixth, one in the eighth and ninth innings. After a Wade solo shot in the sixth, GC looked to pull off the comeback in the ninth.

With runners on first and second, Rylan Smith doubled to right center to score Bryce Vestal. Grayson Tudor followed with a single to center as Hairston and Rylan Smith scored. Unfortunately, the comeback stalled as the visitors held on for the win.

Guilford (6-5, 1-1) will host William Peace University on Tuesday, March 7 at McBane Field. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
