The Guilford College baseball team hosted William Peace University in an midday showdown. After trailing by five, the Quakers scored six to rally and win 14-12.
In the opening frame, William Peace scored four runs on five hits. In the bottom half of the inning,
Rylan Smith singled through the left side to bring home
Bryce Vestal.
The Quakers added another run as
Bryce Vestal drew a walk with the bases loaded to pull within two (4-2). William Peace added three runs in the third to hold a 7-2 edge.
In the bottom half of the third,
Grayson Tudor hit a sacrifice fly to right as
Isaiah Hairston tagged from third. The very next at-bat,
Carter Blum doubled as
Rylan Smith crossed home.
The visitors scored two in the fourth off solo home runs before GC scored in the bottom half.
In the sixth, the game started to turn in favor of Guilford. WPU added a run in the top part of the frame but then the home team took over. With the bases loaded, Sumner was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run. Hairston followed with a sacrifice fly as Henderson tagged up.
Rylan Smith, Tudor and Blum drove in the next four runs to give the Quakers an 11-10 edge. The hosts added to the advantage with back-to-back RBI singles to go ahead by three, 13-10.
The Pacers did not back down as they scored two runs in the top of the eighth. Sumner pushed the difference back to two (14-12) with an RBI single as
Allden Horne crossed home.
In the ninth, the visitors had two runners on with one out but
Chase Wade forced a lineout and struck out the final batter to save the win.
Rylan Smith went 4-4 on the day with four RBI and two runs.
Ty Clark picked up the win, throwing three innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits. Wade picked up the save as he pitched the final two innings.
Guilford completes the home-and-home with William Peace on Wednesday, March 8 in Cary, N.C. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
