The Guilford College softball team welcomed Averett University for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference opener. The Quakers swept the Cougars, 7-4 and 3-2.
Game 1: Guilford 7, Averett 4
With both teams being held scoreless in the first, it was Averett that opened the scoring. The Cougars scored on a RBI single up the middle followed by a sacrifice fly to center.
In the bottom half the frame,
Makenley Mitchell drove a ball into left center to score two runs. Later in the inning,
Abbie Hill doubled to right center that brought home
Kassidy Lancos and Mitchell. Hill later scored as on an error by the left fielder.
Anna Frazier drove in another run in the third to plate
Lani Procell to give Guilford a 6-2 edge. The visitors added two more runs in the fifth to pull within just two runs, 6-4.
Guilford and Hill added the final run in the sixth as
Kaci Johnson scored on the infield single.
Frazier picked up the win, throwing five innings to allow four runs (three earned) on nine hits.
Dillon Northen picked up the save as she pitched the final two innings allowing just one hit.
Game 2: Guilford 3, Averett 2
Averett attempted to grasp the early edged but left two runners on base. In the bottom of the first, Lancos scored on a wild pitch to give GC the lead.
Following a scoreless second, the Quakers doubled its advantage when
Ally Morales doubled to center field to bring home Lancos.
In the fourth, Lancos drew a walk with the bases loaded as
Morgan Kinney crossed home plate. In the top of the fifth, the Cougars pulled within one on a double to left center. With a runner in scoring position,
Shiloh Gray forced a foul out and then a ground out.
From that point, Gray held the visitors to just one hit to secure the 3-2 victory. In the win, she pitched the complete game, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits with three strikeouts.
Lancos and Morales each finished with two hits and an RBI while Lancos scored twice.
Guilford will host North Carolina Wesleyan on Wednesday, March 29 for its "Score for the Cure" game. Game one will start at 2:00 p.m.
