GC Sweeps Home Doubleheader

The Guilford College softball team welcomed Methodist University to Haworth Field for a doubleheader. The Quakers swept the matchup, 7-2 and 12-3.

Game 1: Guilford 7, Methodist 2

The first three and a half innings were scoreless between the two squads until Cassie Turner singled through the right side to bring home Anna Frazier.

Two at-bats later, Abbie Hill hit a single to left field as Turner and Makenley Mitchell crossed home. Guilford led 3-0 going to the fifth.

In that inning, Methodist got on the board with a solo home run over the center field fence. The Quakers answered in its half of the inning as Anna Frazier doubled down the left field line to bring home Grace Calus.

The Monarchs added to its total in the sixth but GC notched its final three runs on two hits and an error. 

Dillon Northen started in the circle, going five innings and allowed one run on five hits and three strikeouts. Frazier picked up the save, tossing the final two innings and giving up one run (unearned) with an additional three strikeouts.

Game 2: Guilford 12, Methodist 3 (6 Inn.)

Similar to the first, the game started with the first couple innings going scoreless. This time it was the bottom of the third when the Quakers got on the board. Sacrifice flies off the bats of Shiloh Gray and Morgan Kinney gave GC the 2-0 edge.

The visitors cut the difference in half with an RBI single to right field. However, Guilford expanded its lead as Kassidy Lancos and Abbie Hill scored on back-to-back RBI plays. 

Hill later pushed the Quaker lead to five (6-1) as her single up the middle brought home two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. In the sixth, Methodist scored to more runs on a hit and an error.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Guilford bats went to work. The hosts put together five hits and two walks to score six runs and win the game by nine.

Gray started for the Quakers, throwing 5.1 innings with one run (earned) on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

Guilford (10-6) will host Averett University for the first conference matchup of the season on Saturday, March 25. Start time is set for 12:00 p.m.
