The Guilford College baseball team hit the road to face the number-6 ranked Shenandoah University Hornets. The Quakers fell in both games, 9-6 and 8-3.
Game 1: #6 Shenandoah 9, Guilford 6
In the opening frame, it was Shenandoah that got on the board first as the runner scored on a wild pitch. Guilford responded in the second as
Bryce Vestal hit an infield single to bring home
Colin Smith.
The bottom half of the second, the Hornets recaptured the lead as they scored five runs on four hits and an error. SU led 6-1 going to the third.
Michael Sumner scored the next Quaker run as
Rylan Smith grounded out in the third.
Shenandoah added another run as well in the third and held a 7-2 advantage until the bottom of the sixth. The hosts scored two more runs on a ground out and a sacrifice fly.Â
GC trailed by seven until the top of the ninth when
Rylan Smith hit a grand slam to cut the deficit to three. The Quakers ultimately fell by that difference, 9-6.
Jacob Ray started on the mound, throwing six innings, allowing nine runs (six earned) on 10 hits.
Game 2: #6 Shenandoah 8, Guilford 3
The second part of the doubleheader was all Hornets early on. They scored one in the first and four in the second to gain a 5-0 edge.
It took until the top of the fourth when
Jordan Burrough hit an RBI single as
Isaiah Hairston scored.
Shenandoah added a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to open a seven-run lead, 8-1.
Guilford scored its final two runs in the eighth with an RBI single from Burrough and then
Rylan Smith scored on a failed pickoff attempt by the catcher.
Guilford (9-9-1, 1-4-1) remains on the road as it will face the Panthers of Ferrum College on Wednesday, March 22. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
