The Guilford College baseball team hit the road to face the Falcons of Pfeiffer University. After capturing an early 4-0 lead, the Quakers fell in the 11th inning, 5-4.
In the first inning,
Rylan Smith gave Guilford the early lead with a two-run homer over the left field wall. The Quakers added to it in the third when
Rylan Smith reached on a fielder's choice as
Michael Sumner scored.
With a 3-0 lead,
Jacob Ray hit a sacrifice fly to right as
Bryce Vestal tagged up and scored. In the bottom of the sixth, Pfeiffer got on the board to trail by three (4-1).
In the bottom of the eighth, the Falcons scored on a RBI double and single to pull within one. With a runner on third, an RBI single up the middle tied the game at four.
Guilford had a chance in the top of the ninth as it had the bases loaded with two outs but were unable to capitalized.Â
Neither team truly threatened to score until the 11th when the Quakers once again had the bases loaded but was unable to bring a run home.
In the bottom of the inning, drew three walks to load the bases with two outs. During what would be the final at-bat, the Falcons' Josh Turner faced eight pitches but drew a walk to win the game by one (5-4).
Rylan Smith finished the evening with three hits, driving in three runs and scoring once.
Jacob Phillips started on the mound and went five innings in the no decision, allowing just five hits with three strikeouts.
Guilford travels north on Saturday, March 18 to face the sixth-ranked Shenandoah University Hornets. Game one is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
