Valiants Rally Past GC

The Guilford College women's lacrosse team hosted Manhattanville College for an early Saturday matchup. The Quakers fell to the Valiants, 10-7.

The first quarter started off slow as both teams went the first six minutes without scoring. The Quakers were able to break the scoreless streak with a man down goal by Sydne Sawyer. 

Guilford continued to increase its lead as it netted back-to-back goals by Mackenzie Richards and Caitlyn Fisher within four minutes. The visiting squad were able to catch up towards the end of the quarter as GC led 3-2. 

Sawyer started the second scoring once more but the Valiants responded with a goal to stay right behind the Quakers, 4-3. Exchanging goals, the Quakers and Valiants went into halftime with the home team ahead, 5-4. 

The third went scoreless for the first four minutes until Guilford took over and scored another set of back-to-back goals by Sawyer and Richards. Manhattanville then scored two-straight goals to close the gap and end the third trailing by one (7-6).

To start off the fourth, the Valiants scored the first goal, tying the score 7-7 on a free position shot. The visitors followed with two man-up goals on the Quakers to increase their score, 9-7.

Exchanging fouls and turnovers, Manhattanville kept control of the whole fourth quarter and ended the matchup, 10-7. 

Sawyer finished with three goals while Richards followed behind with two. Zenna Carson made a total of 19 saves for the Quakers.

Guilford will travel to face North Carolina Wesleyan College on Wednesday, March 15. Start time is 6:00 p.m.
