Baseball and Tornados Split Doubleheader

The Guilford College baseball team completed its road trip to Brevard as it split the Sunday doubleheader with the hosts. The Quakers won the first game, 17-12, but fell in game two, 8-6.

Game 1: Guilford 17, Brevard 12

In game one, it was Guilford that struck first when Michael Sumner doubled to plate Bryce Vestal. From there, Brevard took over as it scored three runs on three hits.

In the bottom of the second, the hosts added eight runs on five hits to capture an 11-1 edge. Isaiah Hairston homered to right center to start the comeback as the Quakers trailed 11-3.

The visitors and Nick Boles started the fourth a solo shot to left. Later in the inning, Grayson Tudor brought home two more runs on a single to left. In total, GC scored five runs in the inning to cut the difference to three (11-8).

Brevard scored its final run in the bottom of the fourth but the Quaker bats stayed hot. In the fifth, Guilford even the game at 12 with a three-run blast off the bat of Rylan Smith.

Allden Horne kept the home run train going with a solo one to left field. Colin Smith drove a single down the left field line to bring home Carter Blum.

The Quakers added the final three runs on two hits and errors to secure the victory. Reese Baker picked up the win as Chase Wade was credited with the save.

Game 2: Brevard 8, Guilford 6

Similar to game one, Guilford scored first as Hairston doubled to center so Sumner could score. Later in the inning, Hairston came home on the Horne double to right center.

The Quakers added to their lead in the top of the third with back-to-back RBI singles to go ahead 4-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Tornados cut the lead in half as two runs scored on an error.

An RBI double off the bat of Wade scored Horne to hand GC a three-run lead, 5-2. Brevard scored six runs on six hits to take its first lead of the game.

Down to its final inning, Guilford scored a run off another Hairston hit but that's where the comeback ended.

Horne was a perfect 3-3 from the plate with two runs driven in and scoring once. Jacob Ray pitched five innings in the no decision, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and three strikeouts.

Guilford hosts crosstown rival Greensboro College on Wednesday, March 1. Start time is set for 2:00 p.m.
