GC Scores Early and Often in Rain Shortened Win

The Guilford College baseball team faced Castleton University for the second time this week. The Quakers claimed the win, 15-3, as the game was called after five innings due to rain.

Castleton struck first in the opening as they scored three runs including an Evan Keegan sacrifice fly to center field. In the bottom half the frame, Rylan Smith hit a sacrifice fly as Bryce Vestal scored. Later in the first, Michael Sumner scored on a failed pickoff attempt.

The second inning started off with the visiting squad going down in order. Guilford scored seven runs on four hits to take a 9-3 edge, led by a two RBI single from Smith.

Another two 1-2-3 innings for Jackson Marcellus, Blum stepped up to the plate to hit a homerun, 11-3, in the bottom of the fourth. Following Blum's homerun, Boles was able to find himself at home as Jacob Ray reached first on a throwing error and advanced to second.

After the bases were loaded, Blum drew a walk to plate Isaiah Hairston and give GC a 15-3 lead. At this point, the weather was too much as the game was called after the fifth.

Rylan Smith led the Quakers with four RBI. Smith, Hariston, and Sumner each finished with two hits. Jackson started on the mound and went five innings, allowing three runs on two hits with five strikeouts.

Guilford will face Northern Vermont-Lyndon at Brevard, N.C. on Saturday, February 25. Start time is set for 12:00 p.m.
