Guilford Drops Two Against Phoenix

The Guilford College baseball team opened the 2023 campaign against Wilson College, The Quakers fell to the Phoenix in both games, 18-10 and 8-1.

Game 1: Wilson 18, Guilford 10

Wilson wasted little time getting started in the first inning as it plated three runs on three hits and an error. After Guilford went down in order, the Phoenix went back to work. The visitors scored 10 more runs on 11 hits including a three-run homer over the right field fence. 

In the bottom of the second, Isaiah Hairston led the inning off with a line drive homerun down the right field line. However, after two, Wilson led 13-1.

Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when the Quakers added four runs off doubles from Hairston and Colin Smith. A sacrifice fly by Nick Boles later in the inning cut the deficit to eight (13-5).

The Phoenix added five more runs over the next two innings to garner an 18-5 edge. In the bottom of the sixth, Boles drove in another run with single to center field and loaded the bases. Chase Wade later cleared the bases with a double to right center to be within nine (18-9).

In the bottom of the seventh, Michael Sumner scored but the the difference proved too large as the visitors won by eight runs.

Game 2: Wilson 8, Guilford 1

In game two, it took until the second when the Phoenix hit a grand slam to quickly grasp a 4-0 lead. Guilford responded as Carter Blum singled through the left side to plate Jacob Ray following his triple. 

Unfortunately, the Quakers offense was stymied for the remainder of the contest. Wilson added two runs in the fourth and seventh to secure the win.

Guilford faces Wilson College on Sunday, February 19 to complete the three-game series. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
