The Guilford College baseball team concluded its three-game series with Wilson College. Despite trailing by 10 early, the Quakers rallied and walked it off in the bottom of the ninth for the 14-13 win.
Wilson wasted little time as it scored six runs on five hits in the first including a three-run shot over the left field wall. In the following inning, the Phoenix added four more runs on five hits to gain a 10-0 lead.
No additional runs were scored until the bottom of the third when
Chase Wade led the inning off with a solo home run to center field. Later in the frame,
Isaiah Hairston hit a sacrifice fly to drive in
Adam Anderson.
The Quakers carried its momentum into the fourth as
Rylan Smith scored on a wild pitch. During the same at-bat, Wade doubled to right as
Colin Smith crossed home to make it a 10-4 game.
In the fifth,
Colin Smith hit a sacrifice fly to continue the run for GC before
Michael Sumner singled through the left side in the sixth to score two more and make it a 10-7 game.
After adding a run in the seventh, the Quakers scored two more in the eighth off a sac fly and a single to even the score at 10.
In the top of the ninth, Wilson drew a walk with the bases loaded and during the next at-bat, the visitors scored two more on a passed ball followed by an error.
Trailing by three, Guilford looked to respond once more and walk it off. Following a fielder's choice,
Grayson Tudor doubled to left center to place him and Wade in scoring position. During
Bryce Vestal's at-bat, Wade scored on a wild pitch.
Tudor later scored on an infield single by Sumner to pull GC within one (13-12). With two outs,
Rylan Smith singled through the left side as Vestal and Sumner scored to give the Quakers the win.
From the plate,
Rylan Smith went 4-4 with three RBI and scored another run.
Chase Wade picked up the win but it was
Logan Dodson that stood out on the mound. Dodson threw five scoreless innings in relief, giving up four hits while striking out six.
Guilford welcomes Castleton University on Wednesday, February 22. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
