Quakers Prevail in Turnover-Heavy Matchup over Falcons

The Guilford College women's basketball team began their winter break slate, welcoming the Falcons of Pfeiffer University. In an affair that included 59 total turnovers between both squads, the Quakers used a strong fourth quarter offensively to win by a comfortable 26-point margin, 80-54. 

Guilford came out firing in the first quarter, eventually coming out with a 17-point lead. Their 27 points in a single period totals their best so far this season; Ashtyn Zeigler and Anna Giannopoulou scored six each while holding the opposing squad to just five field goals and forcing 10 turnovers. 

The Falcons fought back in the second, in a period which featured just 25 total points and 21 total turnovers. The Pfeiffer defense clamped the home offense; Guilford did not attempt a single shot in the last five minutes before the halftime whistle. Both defenses showcased their pickpocketing skills, with 13 total steals. Despite being stymied, the home side led by 16 (39-23). 

The visiting team quickly started with a 4-0 run to begin the third quarter. Guilford came out of the ensuing timeout swinging with a 12-1 run of their own. A team-oriented effort, five different scorers propelled the Quakers to a 51-28 lead with 4:34 to go in the third. Much like the previous periods, turnovers were prevalent between both squads; GC forced Pfeiffer to 12 turnovers, adding on eight more steals.

Both teams had their best offensive period in the fourth. The Quakers rode another 12-2 early on; in key part to Courtney McMillan's four points in this stretch, the home side stretched their lead with 5:19 remaining. Ahead comfortably, the benches were emptied, and Guilford propelled themselves to their seventh win of the season, 80-54.

The Quakers had their best defensive showing of the season, forcing 36 turnovers and scoring 38 points off said turnovers. Guilford also led in the steal margin (23-13) and blocks (4-2).

McMillan led the Quakers with 13 points, six rebounds, and a season-high five steals. Giannopoulou was the other Quaker in double digits, posting 10 points, six rebounds and three steals of her own. Jermia Walker showcased her defensive prowess with five steals. 

Guilford hits the road for an ODAC matchup before the Christmas intermission, taking on Randolph-Macon on Sunday, December 17. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
