The Guilford College men's soccer team welcomed Ferrum College to Appenzeller Field for the conference opener of the season. The Quakers fell to the Panthers, 3-1.
Both teams were evenly matched at the start with most of the play taking place near midfield. At the 16-minute mark, Ferrum (3-2-1, 1-0-0) garnered a corner kick and capitalized. As the ball sailed into the box, the Panther's Leo Galpin headed the ball into the right corner for the early lead.
Little over two minutes later, FC's Lewis Darley stole the ball from a Guilford (1-3-3, 0-1-0) defender and had a one-on-one opportunity and scored on the chance. In the 20th minute,
Ryan Doyle did the exact same and intercepted a pass from a Ferrum defender. Doyle found
Kenny Nzekwe alone in the box for the easy touch-and-go goal to pull within one (2-1).
Play for the remainder of the half was even as the first half horn sounded.
In the second half, each team went back-and-forth with possession until the 63-minute. The Panthers had another corner kick, as the ball was sent into the box, Galpin headed towards the middle where Cannon Newell headed the ball into the lower right corner for the goal.
The Quakers placed four shots on goal and held a good amount of the possession in the last 20-plus minutes but were unable to convert and fell by the two-goal margin.
GC held the edge in shots (12-7) and shots on goal (7-6) but Ferrum totaled five corner kicks compared to two.
Roman Robinson made three saves in 90 minutes of action.
Guilford hosts Randolph College on Saturday, September 24. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
