The Guilford College baseball team welcomed Eastern Mennonite University to McBane Field for an afternoon twin bill. The Quakers fell in game one before bouncing back and taking game two.
Game 1: Eastern Mennonite 22, Guilford 16
EMU scored the opening runs of the game in the first inning. The visitors plated five runs on six hits and an error to take early command. In the second, the Royals added two more runs to go ahead by seven.
EMU added to its lead in the fourth with a solo home run. In its half of the fourth, Guilford got on the board when
Colin Smith homered over the left field wall. Leading by seven (8-1), the Royals grew its lead in the fifth with six runs on five hits.
In the bottom half of the inning,
Michael Sumner singled through the right side to bring home
Izaac McGuire. EMU added a run in the sixth and two in the seventh to lead 17-2.
The Quakers did not give up as the bats went to work in the bottom of the eighth. GC scored seven runs on seven hits led by a two-RBI single from
Bryce Vestal.
Up 17-9, the Royals added five runs in the top of the ninth. Guilford looked to make one last push in the bottom of the ninth. The offense pieced together two hits, seven walks to score seven runs with two-RBI base knocks from
Isaiah Hairston and
Austin Bailey.
Unfortunately, the late surge by the Quakers fell short as the visitors held on for the six-run (22-16) victory.
Game 2: Guilford 7, Eastern Mennonite 6
Similarly to game one, EMU scored the first run, this time off a solo home run over the right field fence. In the third, it added to its lead with a RBI groundout.
Trailing 2-0,
Grayson Tudor scored the first Guilford run as Hairston was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Neither team scored in the fourth and fifth innings.
After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the sixth, the Quakers were primed to take its first lead of the day. Tudor delivered such with a double down the right field line as
Adam Anderson and Hairston crossed home plate.
Later in the inning,
Carter Blum scored while Vestal reached on an error. After a stolen base, Tudor scored on a wild pitch to give GC a 5-2 lead going to the seventh.
In the seventh, the Royals cut the deficit to two (5-3) with a RBI single to left field. The visitors added three runs in as many hits in the eighth to go up by one, 6-5.
In their half of the eighth, the Quakers looked to recapture the lead. After a walk and a single, Sumner laid down a sacrifice bunt that allowed
Larry McMillian II to score and tie the game at six. The next at-bat, Smith singled to left field to plate Vestal.
Leading 7-6,
Ty Clark faced only four batters and secured the win for Guilford.
Tudor led the Quakers with three hits, two RBI and two runs. Hairston added two hits with a RBI and a run.
Logan Dodson started on the mound and went six innings, giving up two runs (all earned) on seven hits and striking out five in the no decision
Guilford (8-16, 3-9) hits the road on Tuesday, April 12 to face Emory & Henry College. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
