GC Picks Up Road Win

The Guilford College baseball team traveled to Virginia to battle Emory & Henry College. The Quakers defeated the Wasps, 12-9.

E&H (7-21) started the competition by scoring the first two runs on a single to center field in the first inning. Guilford (9-16) responded in the top of the second by scoring one run as Allden Horne scored on a Nick Boles single to left center.

After Wasps added a run in the second, the Quakers were able to tie the score in the next inning when Isaiah Hairston singled to right field, sending Michael Sumner home. In the next at-bat, Horne flied out to left field giving Colin Smith the chance to tag up.

Guilford kept its momentum into the fourth inning when Boles scored on a wild pitch. Hairston drove in another run, this time a double to right as Sumner scored.

Hairston then scored when Austin Bailey hit a single up to the middle and advanced to second. Bailey eventually made it home on a single through the right side off the bat of Horne. Horned capped off the scoring as Izaac McGuire singled to give GC an 8-3 lead.

The Quakers didn't let up on the Wasp. In the fifth, Vestal scored as Smith advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sumner and Smith scored when Bailey drove a ball into left field. Hairston scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.

Trailing 12-3, The Wasp scored four runs on four hits in their half of the fifth. E&H added two more runs in sixth to trail by three (12-9).

Chase Wade held the hosts to only one base runner over the seventh and eighth innings. Ty Clark came for the ninth and preserved the win and picked up the save.

Hairston went 2-5  with two RBI and two runs while Bailey was 4-5, driving in three runs and scoring once. Wade picked up the win, going 2.1 innings with no hits, no runs and striking out four.

Guilford will host fifth-ranked Lynchburg on Saturday, April 16 for a conference doubleheader. Game one is set to start at 12:00 p.m.
