Baseball Out Hits Panthers

A five-run fifth led the way for Guilford College baseball as it topped the Ferrum Panthers Wednesday night, 11-9.

Guilford (10-18, 4-11) opened the game with a leadoff homer from Bryce Vestal. Michael Sumner scored the second run of the inning on a Isaiah Hairston single to center. Colin Smith capped off the inning as he scored on a sacrifice fly from Hayes Henderson.

Trailing 3-0, Ferrum got on the board in the bottom of the first with a solo home run. In the bottom of the second, the Panthers scored three runs on four hits to take a 4-3 lead.

The Quakers responded in the fourth as Sumner singled to center field to bring home Allden Horne. In the next at-bat, Carter Blum scored on a sac fly to right by Smith to put GC ahead by one (5-4).

The Panthers recaptured the lead in their half of the fourth as four runs scored on two hits and two errors. Behind three (8-5), Guilford added a run off a single from Blum. Henderson followed by scoring as Larry McMillian II singled through the left side.

Vestal gave the Quakers the lead with a double to clear the bases and score two runs. Vestal then scored on a Sumner single to right as GC led 10-8.

The score remained this way until the eighth when Smith scored on a wild pitch. Ferrum added a run in the bottom of the eighth. Ty Clark preserved the win and picked up the save, pitching two innings, allowing the lone run on two hits and striking out three.

Sumner went 4-6 with two RBI and a run. Smith was 3-5 while Vestal went 2-5, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Chase Wade picked up the win, going 3.1 scoreless innings and only allowing two hits.
