Game Recap: Baseball |

Guilford Drops Two Against Hornets

The Guilford College baseball team welcomed the Lynchburg Hornets to McBane Field for a doubleheader. The Quakers fell to the Hornets in both games.

Game 1: #5  Lynchburg 21, Guilford 10

Lynchburg scored the opening runs of the game in the first inning. The Hornets plated five runs on five hits to take an early lead.

Guilford also started with a bang, adding five runs of its own to even the score. First run came from Bryce Vestal as Michael Sumner singled. On a single to first, Colin Smith sent Sumner home.

Smith later scored on a fielder's choice that allowed Izaac McGuire to reach. The following at-bat, Grayson Tudor drove in Isaiah Hairston before Austin Bailey scored on a ground out.

Lynchburg recaptured the lead in the second with a sacrifice fly to center and a RBI single. Trailing 8-5, Vestal scored in the bottom of the second on a Sumner single. Later in the inning, Bailey plated Sumner with a single to left.

In the top of the third, the Hornets added five more runs on five hits and then added a run in the fourth to double up Guilford, 14-7.

The score remained this way until the bottom of the seventh. With runners at second and first, Vestal homered to left field to pull the Quakers within four (14-10).

The visitors added a run in the eighth before capitalizing on three errors in the ninth for six runs and the 11-run victory.

Game 2: #5 Lynchburg 11, Guilford 3

Similarly to game one, Lynchburg scored the first three runs in the opening frame. The Hornets added a run in the second and three in the third to open up a 7-0 edge.

Guilford got on the board in the third when Bailey doubled to right field as Vestal and Sumner scored. Immediately after, Bailey made it home off a Hairston double down the right field line. Lynchburg's lead was down to four (7-3).

The Hornets responded in the top of the fourth with back-to-back jacks to go ahead 9-3. They added a run in the fifth and the sixth before holding the Quakers to two hits over the last four innings for the win.

Before the game, Guilford honored its six senior members of the team: Bryce Vestal, Max Lattomus, Austin Bailey, Hayes Henderson, Joey Hegeman and Drew Sawyer.

Guilford (9-18, 3-11) hits the road on Wednesday, April 20 to face Ferrum College. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
