Softball Falls to Ferrum

The Guilford College softball team faced the Ferrum College Panthers in a doubleheader in Virginia.The Quakers fell to the Panthers in both games, 9-5 and 5-2.

Game 1: Ferrum 9, Guilford 5 

In the first inning, Guilford started off with a bang as Caitlyn Ray hit a home run. Ferrum came to take the lead in the bottom of the first by scoring a run on a fly out to left field and a run on a single up the middle, 2-1.

After no scoring in the second inning from both teams, Kassidy Lancos opened the top of the third with a run as Ray tripled to right field tying the score, 2-2. 

The Panthers recaptured the lead in their half of the inning with a RBI single. The hosts then expanded its lead in the fourth with a three-run homer. Ferrum scored again in the bottom of the fifth to lead by five (7-2.)

The Quakers cut the deficit in the top of the sixth with another home run by Ray. GC added two more runs in the top of the sixth with a two-run blast off the bat of Ally Morales.

Ferrum added an additional two runs with the game's fifth homer in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 9-5 win.

Ray went 3-3 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs. Grace Calus went 2-3 while Morales was 1-2 with two runs batted in and scoring once.

Game 2: Ferrum 5, Guilford 2

Guilford started the first inning similar to game one by scoring two runs. Lancos made it home on a fly out to center field while Bunting hit a home run in the next at-bat. 

Ferrum got on the board in the bottom of the second with a RBI single. The hosts eventually tied the game in the bottom of the third with a double to left field.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Panthers captured the lead, 3-2, when the runner scored on a mistake by the Quakers.

Ferrum added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth with a RBI single and a sacrifice fly to go ahead by three (5-2). GC had a runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh but were unable to convert and fell.

Guilford will travel to Salem, Virginia on Saturday, April 16 for a doubleheader at Roanoke College. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
