Baseball Capitalizes on Hitting and Mistakes

The Guilford College baseball team faced Greensboro College in the second of four meetings this season. The Quakers claimed the second game in the series, 10-5.

Guilford (3-6) struck first in the opening frame as Bryce Vestal scored after a leadoff triple. Colin Smith brought him home with a single into the outfield. After Greensboro (3-5) went down in order, the Quakers looked to add to their total.

The first run of the inning scored when Michael Sumner reached on an error as Allden Horne scored. Grayson Tudor then hit a RBI single to plate Sumner and Nick Boles. Smith capped off the inning with another RBI single as Tudor scored. Guilford held a five-run advantage.

Another 1-2-3 inning for Adam Anderson let the Quaker bats get back to work quickly. After the bases were loaded with one out, Vestal hit a sacrifice fly to right to let Carter Blum tag up from third to increase the lead to six.

Guilford kept the lead until the bottom of the fourth when the Pride scored their first run on a balk. The hosts doubled its run total in the fifth with a RBI single. The Quakers added a run in the sixth as Blum brought home Smith with a sacrifice fly to left.

Greensboro answered with a run of its own in its half of the inning but trailed 7-3. Nether team added any runs in the seventh with Guilford looking to add more in the eighth. Austin Bailey scored the first run off an error.

Isaiah Hairston hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Hayes Henderson. Another sacrifice fly, this time by Sumner gave the Quakers a 10-3 lead. The Pride added two runs in the eighth to conclude the end of the scoring as Guilford won by five runs, 10-5.

Both Henderson and Smith finished with four hits while Smith added two RBI and scored once. Blum drove in a run and scored two runs. Anderson started on the mound and went 3.2 innings, allowing one run on one hit and two walks. Izaac McGuire picked up the win in the game.
