The Guilford College baseball team host Shenandoah University in the first Old Dominion Athletic Conference game of the year. The Hornets got the better of the Quakers, 16-9.
Shenandoah (11-4, 1-1) notched the first run in the opening frame with a RBI single. The Hornets held the advantage until the bottom of the second when
Carter Blum grounded out to second as
Isaiah Hairston scored.
The visitors recaptured the lead in the third with a two-run homer over the left field wall. Guilford (3-7, 0-1) cut the deficit to one (3-2) as
Bryce Vestal singled down the right field line as
Michael Sumner scored all the way from first.
In the fifth, Shenandoah opened its advantage with four runs on five hits and two stolen bases. The Quakers responded in their half of the frame with five runs on two hits, two walks and an error.
Colin Smith's two RBI single down the left field line led the inning.
The tie was short lived as a RBI triple then another two-run homer gave the Hornets a 10-7 edge. In the seventh, they added another run with a RBI single. Guilford's Blum brought home Smith a single to right field to pull within three (11-8).
Shenandoah added a run in the eighth and four in the ninth to double up GC.
Allden Horne plated the final run of the game with a single down the right field line.Â
Smith went 3-5 with two RBI and a run.
Adam Anderson collected two hits while Blum drove in two runs and scored once.
Chase Wade started on the mound and went 4.1 innings with seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and striking out three.
Guilford and Shenandoah will wrap up its regular season series on Monday with first pitch at 1:00 p.m.
