The Guilford College baseball team took on the Pfeiffer Falcons in a doubleheader. The Quakers fell in the first game, 6-4, before winning game two, 11-6 in eight innings.
Game 1: Pfeiffer 6, Guilford 4
Both teams were scoreless in the first inning but Pfeiffer looked to strike in the second. Following a one out double, the Falcons used another double to plate two runs. The visitors added another run to take a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Guilford got on the board as
Adam Anderson hit a sacrifice fly to bring home
Austin Bailey. Later in the inning,
Carter Blum singled to left as
Grayson Tudor came home. The next at-bat,
Bryce Vestal reached on a fielder's choice as
Hayes Henderson scored to tie the game at three.
Pfeiffer regained the lead in the third with a RBI single. The visitors held the lead until the bottom of the fourth when
Izaac McGuire drew a walk with the bases loaded to square the game at four.
The following inning, the Falcons went back ahead with a RBI double. Pfeiffer kept the 5-4 lead over the next two-plus innings as it added another run in the top of the eighth. Guilford had the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth but were not able to capitalize and ultimately fell by two.
Blum and Henderson were 3-4 from the plate with Henderson scoring twice.
Chase Wade started on the mound and went five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts.
Game 2: Guilford 11, Pfeiffer 6 (8 Inn.)
Similar to the first game, Pfeiffer took the early lead with a run in the first and second. In the bottom of the second, the Quakers got on the board as
Nick Boles laid down a bunt that allowed
Isaiah Hairston to score.
A few at-bats later,
Clay Dilday doubled to plate
Will Stevens and
Austin Bailey to give Guilford a 3-2 edge. The Falcons tied the game in the fourth with a sacrifice fly but GC had an answer in its half of the inning.
Midway through the inning,
Michael Sumner hit a RBI single to score Boles. Sumner later scored as Tudor singled to give the Quakers a 5-3 lead.
The visitors cut the deficit to one with another sacrifice fly. The score remained 5-4 until the bottom of the sixth when Guilford looked to extend its lead.
GC added six runs on three hits, four walks and an error to jump ahead by seven (11-4). In the seventh, the Falcons had two RBI singles but were still trailing by five. Neither team added runs in the eighth and as the game went to the ninth, the game was called due to darkness.
Bailey was 3-5 with two runs and a RBI as Dilday, Tudor and
Colin Smith each had two hits. Both Dilday and Boles drove in two runs.
Jackson Marcellus started on the mound and picked up the win. The sophomore pitcher went five innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits and striking out four.
Guilford (2-6) is set to face Greensboro College on Wednesday, March 4 at Truist Point in High Point, North Carolina. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
