GC Visits Roanoke

The Guilford College baseball team traveled to Virginia to battle Roanoke College. The Quakers fell to the Maroons, 23-15. 

Roanoke started the competition by scoring the first run on a fielding error in the first inning.

Guilford responded in the top of the second by scoring four runs on three hits. Austin Bailey scored the first run on a RBI single by Michael Sumner. The next at-bat, Bryce Vestal hit a three-run homer over the right field wall to take a 4-1 lead.

The Quakers increased their lead in the next inning as Colin Smith scored on a sacrifice bunt. Adam Anderson later doubled to right center to bring home Bailey and Isaiah Hairston to lead 7-1.

Guilford kept its momentum into the fifth inning when Sumner doubled through the left side to plate Anderson and Bailey. After the RBI double, Carter Blum scored on a passed ball as Sumner advanced to third.

Sumner then scored as Vestal grounded out to second. Tudor capped off the scoring when Hairston doubled to right center, extending the GC lead to 11 (12-1).

The Maroons scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth but Hairston hit a three-run homerun in the top of the seventh to go ahead, 15-3

Roanoke chipped away at the deficit in the seventh. The hosts scored six runs on six hits to cut the difference down to six (15-9).

After no score in the top of the eighth, the Maroons offense erupted for 14 runs on nine hits to go in front, 23-15.

The hosts held on for the eight-run victory.

Hairston went 2-3 with four RBI and two runs including the three-run homer. Vestal also drove in four runs and scored twice with a three-run homer. Logan Dodson started on the mound and went five innings, allowing one run (unearned) on four hits in a no decision.

Guilford will travel up the street to Greensboro College on Wednesday, March 30. The game is set to start at 5:00 p.m.
