The Guilford College softball team stayed at home for an ODAC doubleheader against Eastern Mennonite University. The Quakers defeated the Royals in game one, 7-5, but lost game two, 7-3.
Game 1: Guilford 7, Eastern Mennonite 5
EMU started off by scoring the first run in the first inning with a RBI double to center. Guilford came back even hotter in the bottom of the first. After two singles and a walk to load the bases, Alli Clemens launched a ball over the center field wall for the grand slam.
The Quakers were not finished in the bottom first as Taylor Mitchell singled to left field to send Casey Bunting home. GC led 5-1 going to the second inning.
The Royals responded with three runs on three hits to pull within one. Guilford expanded its lead with Morales reaching first on a fielding error causing Katey Griswold to cross home. Morales later scored on a RBI single from Bunting.
EMU added one more run in the top of the sixth but that closed the scoring as the Quakers held on for the two-run victory.
Griswold and Bunting each finished with two hits while Clemens drove in four runs on the grand slam.
Alexis Lester picked up the win, throwing 5.2 innings in relief.
Game 2: Eastern Mennonite 7, Guilford 3
The Quakers started off game two by scoring the first run by Kassidy Lancos as Morales doubled to right center.
Following a scoreless second inning, the Royals tied the game in the top of the third. In the bottom half of the inning, Caitlyn Ray doubled to right field to send Lancos home to regain the lead, 2-1.
It wasn't long for EMU to come back and take the lead. In the top of the fourth, the Royals scored two runs on a double and a single to go in front, 3-2. The visitors added two more runs in the fifth and seventh to lead by five (7-2).
The Quakers tried to rally in the seventh but were only held to one run and ultimately fell by four, 7-3. Lancos went 3-3 from the plate and scored two runs while Ray, Morales and Bunting each collected two hits.
Guilford (10-14, 0-3) welcomes Bridgewater College on Saturday, April 2. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
