Baseball Drops Two to Tigers

The Guilford College baseball team hosted Hampden-Sydney College  in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Quakers fell to the Tigers in both games, 10-5 and 10-1.

Game 1: Hampden-Sydney 10, Guilford 5

Following a scoreless first, Hampden-Sydney scored the first run in the second inning with a sacrifice fly to center. Later in the inning, the Tigers stole second base and as the throw went towards second, the runner on third broke for home and scored.

H-SC expanded on its lead, 2-0, in the top of the third as a run scored on a fielder's choice. The visitors remained in front until the bottom of the fourth when Allden Horne hit a RBI single to bring home Isaiah Hairston.

In the next at-bat, Adam Anderson drove in Austin Bailey with a single to left field to pull Guilford within one (3-2). In the following inning, the Tigers grew their lead back out to three (5-2) with a two-run homer.

The Quakers looked to respond in the sixth as they executed the delay steal as Anderson scored. Michael Sumner then scored on a fielding error that allowed Bryce Vestal to reach. After a walk, Colin Smith singled to score Vestal and tie the game at five.

In the top of the seventh, H-SC led off the inning with a solo home run to recapture the lead. The Tigers added to it in the eighth with four runs on three hits and two errors to go ahead, 10-5. Hampden-Sydney held on for the win.

Game 2: Hampden-Sydney 10, Guilford 1

The second game was drastically different compared to the first. Despite a scoreless three innings to start, the Tigers exploded for four runs on three hits. In the fifth, the visitors added to its lead with a RBI double.

Guilford got on the board in its half of the fifth with an Izaac McGuire single to bring home Sumner. H-SC added two runs in the sixth with a two-run homer over the right field wall.
