The Guilford College women's lacrosse team welcomed the Hornets of Kalamazoo College Wednesday evening. The Quakers fell to the Hornets, 12-6.
Guilford (3-5) opened the game with the first goal from the stick of
Maggie Bryson. Kalamazoo (5-3) evened the score at the 8:09 mark but 11 seconds later,
Maggie Hartnett scored a man-up goal to recapture the lead.
The Hornets answered with two-straight goals to jump ahead 3-2. With 4:30 to play in the first,
Sydne Sawyer found the back of the net to tie the game once more. Kalamazoo tallied the final goal of the period to lead 4-3 going to the second.
In the second, neither side found the back of the net until the 6:47 mark when Sawyer once again brought the Quakers to a tie with the Hornets. Just over 30 seconds later,
Caitlyn Fisher scored off a pass from
Maggie Bryson to recapture the lead, 5-4.
4:40 to go in the opening half, Kalamazoo tied the game at five and it remained this way until the halftime horn sounded.
To open the third period, the visitors scored two goals to go ahead 7-5 at the 7:28 mark. Guilford's first goal of the half came with 2:12 on the clock as Sawyer scored, while a man-down, to pull GC within one.
Unfortunately, that was the last scoring play for the Quakers as the Hornets scored five goals over the final 16 minutes of regulation for the six-goal win.
Sawyer finished with three goals while Bryson scored once and picked up an assist. Hartnett added a goal while also corralling five ground balls and causing four turnovers.
Zenna Carson started in net and made 11 saves.
Guilford will host Hollins University on Wednesday, March 30 on Appenzeller Field. Start time is 5:00 p.m.
