Guilford Takes On Crosstown Rivals

The Guilford College softball faced Greensboro College in a doubleheader matchup. The Quakers lost both games against the Pride, 6-0 and 11-7.

Game 1: Greensboro 6, Guilford 0

The first game was a pitching duel between both teams. Neither side scored for the first three innings.

Greensboro eventually broke the scoreless tie with a RBI double to right center for the first run of the game.

As the next two innings went by, neither team was able to score any runs.  

The Pride increased their lead in the top of the sixth with a three-run homer and two runs scoring on a single.

Greensboro held Guilford at bay in the sixth and seventh innings for the win.

Game 2: Greensboro 11, Guilford 7 (10 Inn.)

Game two started conversely different to game one as Katey Griswold reached base on a fielding error, Guilford earned their first two runs in the bottom of the first inning by Ally Morales and Caitlin Ray.

Neither team scored in the next two innings until the top of the fourth when Greensboro tied the score with a RBI single and scored on a wild pitch. The game was tied at two.

The Quakers broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth when Morgan Kinney  singled to center to bring home Morales. The Pride came back to take the lead in the top of the sixth by scoring three runs on three hits and two errors.

Trailing by two (5-3) in the bottom of the seventh, Morales came to bat to hit a homerun over the left center wall to tie the game and send it to extra innings. Both teams went back-and-forth with each squad scoring a run in the eighth and ninth.

Greensboro broke the tie in the top of the 10th and took control of the game. The Pride scored four runs on four hits to secure the 11-7 victory.

Morales finished the game 3-4 with three RBI and two runs including the two-run homer in the seventh. Ray and Kinney each collected two hits.

Guilford (9-11) will stay at home for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 26 to battle Shenandoah. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
