The Guilford College softball team hit the road for two games against the Southern Virginia Knights. The Quakers fell in extra innings before claiming game two.
Game 1: Southern Virginia 3, Guilford 2 (8 Inn.)
Both teams only recorded one hit in the first inning. In the second, Guilford got on the board first when
Shiloh Gray singled to bring home
Abbie Hill. The lead was short lived with Southern Virginia tying the game with a RBI triple.
The Knights held the lead until the top of the sixth as Gray drove in her second run of the game.
Ally Morales scored to tie the game at two. The game remained tied and went to extra innings although both squads left runners in scoring position.
In the eighth, the Quakers advanced a runner to third but was unable to score. Southern Virginia unfortunately was able to take advantage and won game one, 3-2.
Gray and Hill went 2-4 from the plate with Gray driving in both runs. The freshman native of Lexington, North Carolina also started in the circle for GC. She threw 7.2 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits.
Game 2: Guilford 5, Southern Virginia 3
In game two, it was the Quakers who claimed the first lead.
Caitlyn Ray singled with the bases loaded to score
Kylee Duarte and
Cierra Martin. The next at-bat,
Alli Clemens grounded out but
Kassidy Lancos scored to extend the lead to three.
Guilford added to its lead in the third with RBI singles from
Casey Bunting and Duarte to go ahead 5-0. It took till the fifth when the hosts got on the board with a RBI single.
Southern Virginia added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh but
Morgan Kinney got the final out to secure the 5-3 victory.
Kinney pitched all seven innings, allowing the three runs on six hits and striking out four. Lancos and Ray were 2-4 with two RBI for Ray.
Guilford (4-8) remains on the road as it will face the Methodist University Monarchs on Sunday, March 13. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
