The Guilford College men's basketball traveled north to the face the number-one ranked team according to D3hoops.com, the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets. The Quakers were ultimately bested by rebounding in a back-and-forth game, 60-56.
Coming out of the locker room for the final 20 minutes of regulation, both squads were even at 29. Randolph-Macon (19-1, 11-0) made the first basket of the second half before
Joah Logan answered with a jumper. The Yellow Jackets regained the advantage before a free throw form
Jorden Davis and a layup from
Jaylen Gore to give Guilford (12-5, 8-2) a 34-33 edge.
R-MC went ahead with a three but the Quakers evened the game off the hand of Gore. The jumper kicked off a 7-0 run to go ahead 41-36 at the 12:09 mark.
The hosts cut the deficit to two but Davis hit a three as the shot clock expired to go back up by five (44-39). The Yellow Jackets then went on a tear, scoring eight-straight points to jump ahead 47-44 with 8:03 left in regulation.
Logan pulled Guilford within one before two free throws extended the lead back to three (49-46). The Quakers out scored Randolph-Macon 7-2 including four free throws by
Tyler Dearman to go in front 53-51 with 4:07 on the clock.
The Yellow Jackets answered by scoring the next four points to go up by two (55-53).
Liam Ward hit a three on the ensuing possession as Guilford edged forward, 56-55. Unfortunately that was the last make as GC went 0-3 as the hosts scored the final five points to secure the four-point victory.
Ward led Guilford with 14 points and added six rebounds and two steals. Dearman added 12 points and five rebounds.
To start the game, the Quakers to the early lead with a three and a jumper by Ward to go up 5-0 in the first three minutes. Randolph-Macon went three-for-three from distance to take its first lead of the night, 9-7.
Both squads went back-and forth until the Yellow Jackets took a six-point lead (27-21) with 3:39 on the clock. Guilford then out scored the hosts 8-2 including four from Ward to tie the game at 29 at the half.
Davis was the next highest Quaker on the score sheet with 11 points. Randolph-Macon's Miles Mallory had a game-high 21 points with 11 rebounds. The main difference was rebounding as the Yellow Jackets won the battle on the boards, 37-29.
Guilford travels to Shenandoah University on Saturday, February 5 to battle the Hornets. Tip-off is 2:00 p.m.
