Guilford Tops Hampden-Sydney in Quarters

The Guilford College men's basketball team took on Hampden-Sydney College in a quarterfinal matchup of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament. The Quakers survived and advanced to the semifinals with a 77-69 victory.

Hampden-Sydney (14-11) opened the game by scoring eight of the first 10 points. The Tigers grew its lead to seven (12-5) before back-to-back three's from Jaylen Gore and Jorden Davis pulled Guilford (18-6) within one (12-11).

The Tigers went on a 9-1 run before a Gore floater and a Julius Burch tip-in brought the score to 21-16 at the 11:24 mark of the first. After both teams exchanged turnovers, Liam Ward backed his way down the lane and found Joah Logan at the left elbow. Logan knocked down the jumper and forced a Hampden-Sydney timeout at the 9:59 mark. The Tigers lead was down to three (21-18).

After the timeout and missed Hampden-Sydney jumper, Ward made layup from under the hoop to pull bring the score to 21-20. The Tigers used a 7-2 run to but the Quakers had a response with back-to-back three pointers from Davis and Tyler Dearman to even the score at 28 with 4:30 to go in the first.

Both squads traded possessions until Dearman went coast-to-coast with a steal to give Guilford its first lead of the game, 30-28. Hampden-Sydney tied the game with two free throws and recaptured the lead with a three. Ward cut the deficit to one (33-32) with a layup directly off an inbound play.

With 25 seconds left in the half, Davis drew a foul and made two free throws to take the one-point lead. GC held on to the advantage at the half, 34-33.

To start the second half, both teams went shot for shot until the 14:52 mark. Following a Caleb Farrish free throw, Davis made two of his own. Another steal by Dearman led to a layup for Farrish to give Guilford a 49-44 lead.

Dearman hit a three to extend the lead to eight (52-44) but Hampden-Sydney made a layup followed by a make from distance to trail 52-49. Four-consecutive free throws by Julius Burch helped the Quaker grow, 56-49.

A layup and a three by the Tigers brought themselves within three (57-54). Free throws made by Dearman and Davis kept GC ahead by five. However, Hampden-Sydney hit a three and a layup to even the game at 61 with 6:21 to go in regulation.

The ensuing possession for the Quakers, Gore made layup through contact and completed the three point play. Dearman hit a jump shot and followed it up with two free throws to capture a 68-61 lead at the 4:50 mark.

The Tigers hit a jumper but free throws by Burch and Ward grew the lead to eight (71-63) with 2:31 left in regulation. Hampden-Sydney cut the deficit to six but Guilford made three of its final four free throw attempts. The Tigers tried to cut into the lead but the Quakers held on for the eight-point victory.

Gore led the team with 16 points with four assists and going 5-5 from the charity line. Davis (15), Dearman (14) and Ward (14) each finished in double digits. Burch added eight points while grabbing 10 rebounds.

The Quakers out rebounded 37-29 and went 31-37 (83.8%) from the line as a team.

Prior to the game, the ODAC honored the All-ODAC recipients. Liam Ward was named First Team, Tyler Dearman to Second Team and Julius Burch to the Third Team.

Guilford is set to face the winner between Virginia Wesleyan and Lynchburg on Saturday, February 26. Start time is set for 3:00 p.m.
