Men's Basketball Falls in ODAC Semifinals

The Guilford College men's basketball team took on Virginia Wesleyan in the semifinals matchup of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament. The Quakers fell short, 77-74.

Va. Wesleyan opened the game by scoring eight of the first 10 points within two minutes from the start. The Marlins continued to increase their lead by 10 at 16:25.

After both teams exchanged turnovers, Tyler Dearman came through with a dunk followed by a clean three pointer by Trey Dezern bringing the score to 28-22. The Quakers began to close the gap as Jaylen Gore and Dearman made back-to-back layups setting the score 33-28.

After a timeout, Guilford was determined to catch up to Virginia Wesleyan. After a couple of back to back shots from both teams, Dearman was able to make four consecutive baskets for the Quakers, closing the gap to being down by two, 36-34.

Both squads traded possessions until at 3:01, the hosts scored six-consecutive points while the Quakers remained the same, ending the first half 44-36. 
 
To start the second half, Guilford scored a good jumper by Joah Logan assisted by Jorden Davis. The Quakers were able to make both free throws after the shit by Davis, putting the score 44-40. GC became close to the Marlins again at 17:02, cutting the gap down by two.

In the middle of the half, the Marlins started to increase their lead again as both teams were going back and forth scoring. Although the Quakers were trailing behind by nine, Liam Ward came in with a good layup followed by a jumper from Davis, 61-56.

At 5:23, Davis scored again but this time with a clean three pointer assisted by Gore. Both teams played great defensive plays but the Marlins remained up in the lead the rest of the half
though, the Quakers were able to stay right behind the hosts by no more than six points. Towards the end of the second half, GC trailed behind by three at 2:09. Both teams were playing at a fast pace as time started whining down. 

The Marlins fouled the Quakers at the one minute mark that led to Ward making both free throws, causing GC to be down by two. With just seven seconds on the clock, both teams were exchanging fouls causing multiple free throws to be made. The Marlins ended the semifinals up by three making both free throws with four seconds on the clock, 77-74.

Dearman led the team with 20 points with one assist and one steal. Gore (15), Davis (14) and Burch (10) each finished in double digits.

The Marlins out rebounded the Quakers 39-28 and went 22-45 (48.9%) from the field as a team. The Quakers shot 16-19 (84.2%) from the free throw line while the Marlins shot 24-35 (68.6%).
