The Guilford College women's lacrosse team opened the 2022 season as the Pacers of William Peace came to visit. The Quakers scored early and often as they won 17-9.
William Peace (0-2) were the first ones to score at the 13:37 mark in the first. Guilford (2-0) responded in abundance with three-straight goals from
Sydney Sawyer to go ahead 3-1.
Maggie Hartnett,
Kylie Horn and
Caitlyn Fisher each picked up an assist.
The Pacers and Madison Bradley cut the deficit back to one at the 9:21 mark of the first. Neither team found the back of the net for the remainder of the period as GC held the 3-2 edge going to the second.
Guilford took complete control in the second period as it scored all six goals in the period. Three of the goals came off the stick of
Maggie Hartnett including a man-up goal. At the half, the Quakers were ahead 9-2.
In the third, the Pacers opened the scoring with two goals to pull within five (9-4). Horn, Sawyer and Hartnett responded with goals of their own to increase the Guilford lead to eight (12-4). Both teams added two more goals as the third drew to a close, the Quakers ahead 14-6.
The final 15 minutes of regulation, both squads exchanged goals as each team added three to its total. GC won by the eight-goal difference.
Sawyer led all scorers with seven goals in addition to three assists. Hartnett added four goals and two assists as Fisher and Horn each totaled three points (2G, 1A).
Zenna Carson started in net and made nine saves in the win.
Guilford will face North Carolina Wesleyan on Saturday, February 26. Start time is 11:00 a.m.
