The Guilford College men's basketball team ventured south to face the Emory University Eagles. A strong second half and 41 bench points lifted the Quakers over the Eagles, 75-61.
Julius Burch led the way for Guilford with 16 points as
Rob Littlejohn added 16 points off the bench.
Myles Washington and
Gabe Proctor added 14 and 11 points from the bench, respectively.
As both teams left the halftime locker rooms, they found themselves tied at 33. Emory (2-1) hit two free throws for the first points of the half but back-to-back three pointers by
Luke Proctor and
Caleb Farrish gave Guilford (3-2) a 39-35 advantage.
The Eagles responded with a 14-0 run to go ahead 10 (49-39) with 11:28 left in regulation. The Quakers cut the deficit to two (49-47) with eight-consecutive points as Burch scored five of them.
Emory held the advantage until the 7:28 mark when Burch tied it at 53 with a layup. The basket was in the middle of a 10-0 stretch for GC that put it up 59-53 just over a minute later.
The Eagles made two free throws to cut the deficit to four (59-55) but the Quakers had other thoughts as they outscored the hosts 13-1 to go ahead 72-56 with 2:15 on the clock. Guilford went on to win by the 14-point margin.
GC corralled 46 rebounds compared to 38 for Emory. The Quakers also held the edge in steals (11-5) and points in the paint (28-14).
Guilford remains on the road as it faces Pfeiffer University on Tuesday, November 22. Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m.
