GC Hosts Washington and Lee on Homecoming

The Guilford College hosted Washington and Lee University on Homecoming Weekend. The Quakers fell to the Generals 31-6.

Washington and Lee (4-1, 2-0) received the opening kick and started its drive at the 29. The Generals use a ground attack for more than 90-percent of the game and they ran the 10 plays, covering 71 yards for the first score of the game. The point after was good as WLU led 7-0.

Guilford (1-4, 0-2) began its first drive at the GC 20 were able to pick up a couple first downs including a 22-yard pass across the middle from Bailey Baker to Eric Mays. The drive stalled and the Quakers punted the ball away.

The Generals took over with 6:49 remaining the in the first quarter. They used 19 plays over 9:35 on the drive as Arturo Ramirez attempted a 38-yard field goal. The kick missed wide right, giving the ball back to the Quakers.

On the drive, GC picked up a first down on a roughing the passer penalty but eventually punted the ball back to the visitors. Washington and Lee ran the ball 14 times for 67 yards capped off by a four-yard touchdown run. A successful point after gave WLU a 14-0 lead with 3:15 left in the first half.

The Quakers third drive started at the GC 44 after a 39-yard return by Chadz Stevenson on the kickoff. After a rush, Baker took over on the drive completing passes of 8, 23 and 20 yards, respectively. With a first-and-goal at the five, Baker rolled to the right and hit Kyle Lovett in the back of the endzone for the score. Cameron Haiduven's point after was blocked as GC trailed 14-6.

Neither team moved the ball as the first half came to a close. Washington and Lee led by eight-point margin (14-6).

To start the second half, Guilford received the kickoff but quickly went three-and-out. On to punt from the GC 33, Cade Ratliff sent the ball 66 yards down field as the it was downed at the Washington and Lee 1.

Facing a long field, the Generals chipped away at the yardage as they covered the 99 yards in 8:53 on 18 plays. A successful point after boosted their lead to 15 (21-6).

The Quakers and Baker started to move the ball on their next drive as the quarterback completed an 18-yard completion to Tre Alexander followed by a 17-yard completion to JuJu Rice. After four more completions, GC was facing a 4th-and-2 at the WLU 32.

Baker was looking towards Alexander but the pass was intercepted by the Generals and returned to the GC 7. Two plays later, Washington and Lee was in the endzone and led 28-6.

Guilford very similar was moving the ball with ease through the air as Baker found Thomas Laws, Rice and Alexander for three first-down pickups and set up the offense on GC 46. An unsportsmanlike penalty moved the ball into General territory but two plays later, Baker was intercepted once more. 

The Quaker defense stood tall on the next Washington and Lee drive and forced a three-and-out. On the next GC drive, Baker was stripped of the ball and Generals fell on the fumble to take back over.

WLU's offense went back to work and used up 7:18 on 11 plays as Ramirez connected on a 30-yard field goal. The Generals led 31-6 with 3:12 remaining in regulation.

Guilford was unsuccessful to pick up a first down on the next drive as Washington and Lee took over with 2:14 to go. The visitors killed the clock for the 25-point victory.

Baker threw for 201 yards and the score on 17 completions with two interceptions. Alexander finished the day with eight receptions for 73 yards.

Guilford travels to Shenandoah University on Saturday, October 15. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
