Quakers Fall in High Scoring Affair

The Guilford College football team ventured north to take on the Hornets of Shenandoah University. Despite being tied at the half, the Quakers fell to the Hornets, 38-35.

Coming out of the half, Guilford and Shenandoah were tied at 28. The Hornets took the opening kick and started with the ball at their own 39. Passes of 46 and 8 yards set up Shenandoah at the seven-yard line. A rush over the right side and a successful point after gave SU a 35-28 advantage.

The Quakers started its first drive of the half with 14:13 on the clock. Bailey Baker completed passes of 19 and 15 yards to Eric Mays and Cory Casilac, respectively. WIth the ball in Shenandoah territory, Guilford was stopped and forced to punt.

The Hornets turned over the ball on downs and set GC up at the SU 39. Baker connected with Tre Alexander and Eric Mays for 17 yards each for a first-and-goal at the five. Back-to-back sacks and a false start made it third-and-goal from the 23-yard line. Baker was then intercepted in the endzone to end the drive.

However, just two plays into the SU drive, James Pegues forced and recovered a fumble to give the ball back to the offense. Unfortunately, just four plays later, Baker was intercepted for the second time in the half.

Taking over at the 10, Shenandoah moved the ball 77 yards over 10 plays capped off by a 31-yard field goal to increase its lead to 10 (38-28).

Guilford and Baker went back to work on offense and wasted little time. The quarterback completed passes of 10, 22 and 28 yards with a run 14 yards mixed in to set up first-and-goal at the 10. Baker called his own number on back-to-back rushes as he found the endzone. Cameron Haiduven's kick attempt was good to pull GC within three (38-35) with 9:58 left in regulation.

Shenandoah setup near midfield moved the ball into Guilford territory and was faced with a fourth-and-two at the GC 10. Montrel Cooper intercepted the Hornets quarterback in the endzone and gave the Quakers the ball at their own 20.

On the first play of the drive, Baker found Mays for a 19-yard pickup. After what seemed to be a five-yard pickup on the ground, a holding penalty made it first-and-20. From there, GC struggled to get anything going and turned the ball over on downs.

Taking over with 4:45 on the clock, the Hornets went straight to the ground game and ran out the clock to secure the three-point victory.

In the first half, there were 16 total possessions with each team scoring on four of them. Baker finished the day with 422 passing yards, four touchdown passes and two interceptions. On the ground, he ran for 30 yards and another touchdown. Mays led the receiving core with nine catches for 160 yards and a score while Alexander scored twice with 103 yards.

Guilford welcomes Ferrum College on Saturday, October 22 for a conference showdown. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
