The Guilford College football team faced the Panthers of Ferrum College. The Quakers were outscored 14-10 in the second as they fell 31-17.
Coming out of the half, Guilford trailed Ferrum by 10 (17-7). GC received the opening kick of the second half and started from its own 32.
Caleb Gibson and
Bailey Baker began to pick apart the Panther defense.
Gibson had four runs that totaled 18 yards while Baker went 3-3 on the drive for 50 yards including the 12-yard touchdown pass to
Kyle Lovett.
Cameron Haiduven made the extra point to pull GC within three (17-14).
Ferrum looked to respond and after five plays, found itself at the Guilford 42. On first down,
Nick Iannone sacked the Panther quarterback and forced an intentional grounding which set up a second and 25. The long field forced FC to punt the ball to the Quakers.
On first down, GC called Baker's number as he kept the ball and ran 32 yards down field. Two plays later, Baker found
Tre Alexander over the middle for a 26-yard gain to set the Quakers up at the visitor 30.
After another first down, Guilford looked to strike but a personal foul moved the ball back to the Ferrum 32. A 13-yard completion to
Eric Mays eventually set up a 36-yard field goal attempt by Haiduven. Despite a knuckle ball, the junior kicker's attempt was good and tied the game at 17.
After each team traded possessions, the Panthers started at the Quaker 47. The visitors used eight plays (seven runs) to cover the 47 yards in 4:01 and retake the lead, 24-17.
GC's next drive began at the 31 and on the second play, Baker found Alexander for a 20-yard pickup to move into Ferrum territory (48). Two pass interferences by the defense setup the offense at the Ferrum 17. On first down, Baker rolled out to his right and was looking to Alexander but the pass was intercepted in the endzone.
The Panther offense kept their rhythm on their drive. The visitors covered 80 yards on 10 plays capped off by a 2-yard run for the score. Ferrum led 31-17 with 2:39 remaining in regulation.
On the ensuing kickoff,
Chadz Stevenson returned the kick 49 yards and set up the Quakers at the Ferrum 44. Facing fourth-and-13, Baker tucked the ball and scrambled for 15 yards. A false start and two incompletions, Baker found Alexander for 12 yard pick up to bring up fourth-and-three. Baker tried to find
JuJu Rice but the pass fell short to seal the win for Ferrum.
Baker finished the day going 20-37 for 270 yards, two scores and three interceptions. The quarterback also led the team in rushing with 68 yards. Alexander caught eight passes for 158 yards.
Guilford travels to Hampden-Sydney on Saturday, October 29. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
