The Guilford College women's basketball team faced the Methodist University Monarchs in a non-conference matchup. In a tightly contested game, the Quakers fell to the Monarchs, 73-65.
The game opened with neither team taking more than a two-point lead. At the 8:06 mark in the first, Linsday Gauldin kicked off an 8-0 run for Guilford (3-7) to take a 14-7 lead. Over the final four-plus minutes, Methodist (7-4) out scored the Quakers 12-4 to lead by one (19-18) going into the second.Â
In the second period, both teams went back-and-forth with the Monarchs gaining a four-point edge (26-22) at the 6:10 mark. Ashtyn Zeigler hit a three to cut the deficit to one but Methodist had went on another run to close out a period. The hosts scored nine of the final 11 points to lead 35-27 at the half.
Guilford came out of the locker room on a mission as it scored eight-straight to even the score at 35 with 7:58 left on the clock in the third. The Monarchs regained the lead and slowly expanded it to nine before the third period ended. Methodist led 51-42 going into the final period of regulation.
The fourth period was a shootout between both squads. Unfortunately, the Quakers were not able to cut the difference any closer than six points and ultimately fell by eight.
Gauldin led all players with 32 points with seven steals, six rebounds and five assists. Zeigler added 10 points while Caroline Wilkerson chipped in nine. Despite out rebounding the Monarchs by 17 (46-29) the separating factor was turnovers as GC committed 10 more turnovers (28-18).
Guilford returns to conference play on Wednesday, January 12 as it faces Ferrum College on the road. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
