Women's Volleyball Unable to Overcome Greensboro in Home-Opener

Box Score

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Guilford College women's volleyball team was unable to overcome cross-town rival Greensboro College on Wednesday as it dropped a 3-1 decision.

The visiting Pride were able to cruise to a set one win, 25-12. The Quakers' forced a Greensboro timeout as it put together a 3-point run on a pair of Pride errors and a Cam Blankenship service ace (14-11). The visitors returned the favor by a 3-point run of their own (17-11). The rest of the set weighed heavily in favor of Greensboro, as it was able to hold Guilford to just two more points.

Set number two went much better for the Quakers, as they were able to claim a narrow 25-22 victory. The early goings of the set saw many ties. Guilford slowly crept ahead on the scoreboard, but were not totally able to put Greensboro out of competition. Each squad used their two timeouts, with the Pride using their last one as the score read 24-22 in favor of the Quakers. Maddi Page served coming out of timeout, but it was ultimately the visitors who handed over the last point, as two of their members collided going for a dig.

Again, Greensboro made light of the hosts, claiming a 25-13 set three. The stanza featured a few good volleys, including an incredibly long one, won by the Pride to make the score 7-4. After one more point by the bad guys, Guilford called a timeout. The break proved to work, as the Quakers recorded two solid points on long volleys, before errors halted their attempt at a comeback.

The final set of the match was again a close one, with the green squad coming out just ahead, 25-21. Greensboro took an early lead, but a Guilford timeout as the score read 9-4 fueled a nice little comeback behind several 3-point runs. They lead for 11 series, with their best run of four points pushing the score to 16-19. A run in the other direction brought the Pride back up. As the two traded blows, the bad guys quickly moved ahead. Guilford used its last timeout of the match as the score read 24-21, but it was a moot point, as Greensboro capitalized on an error to claim the match.

The Quakers will return to action at 6 p.m. on Friday as they open up the William Peace Tournament with a matchup against the hosting Pacers.
