Quakers take opening set before maroons rally to secure ODAC victory

SALEM, Va. - The Guilford College volleyball team (6-17, 2-6 ODAC) opened Wednesday evening's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match up with a first-set victory before Roanoke College (13-6, 4-3 ODAC) rallied to win the next three sets, handing the Quakers a 3-1 defeat at the Cregger Center (25-23, 23-25, 23-25, 23-25).

Guilford finished the match with 37 kills, 34 assists, 10 service aces, 16 total blocks and 71 digs. The Quakers held advantages in blocks (16-9) and digs (71-67), while hitting .086 as a team.

Roanoke responded in the second set, collecting 14 kills to Guilford's eight. The Quakers remained within reach throughout the frame, but the Maroons evened the match with another close 25-23 decision. Guilford hit .028 in the set as Roanoke found more consistency offensively.

The third set featured another tight battle, with both teams working to gain an advantage. Guilford recorded eight kills and five attack errors, while Roanoke tallied 12 kills. Despite the Maroons committing 11 attack errors, they edged the Quakers 25-23 to take a 2-1 lead.

Facing elimination in the fourth set, Guilford continued to compete but could not force a deciding frame. Roanoke produced 13 kills compared to nine for the Quakers, eventually closing out the match with a third consecutive 25-23 set victory.

The Quakers are back in action on Saturday, when they face Sweet Briar College at 1:00 PM.
