Box Score GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Guilford College men's soccer team recorded its first win of the season in a big 3-0 victory over Sewanee University on Saturday afternoon. Junior Kenny Nzekwe recorded two goals, but was eyeing a hat trick.
While it was Riley Copeland that got the Quakers on the board early in the first half, thanks to cross goal dish by Sabastian Salas, it was Logan Eure who stunned the crowd. Eure came up big with a defensive save after his keeper got caught at the 20-yard line.
Not without several tries by the Tigers, the half ended with Guilford up, 1-0.
It took less than five minutes into the second half before Nzekwe found the back of the goal, capitalizing off a forward pass by Jasper Ardinger and a crowd goal front.
History repeated itself four minutes later as the Owerri, Nigeria native intercepted a backwards pass by Sewanee. He made light of a one-on-one with the goalie and scored in the bottom right corner.
In the waning minutes the Tigers dug deep, throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the Quakers, but it was not enough. A steadfast defense and a save or two by Roman Robinson.
Robinson finished the day with a career-best 11 stops, en route to his first-ever shutout.
Guilford will faceoff with its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference competitor on Wednesday, as it travels to Ferrum for an 8 p.m. matchup.
