Box Score DANVILLE, Va. – The Guilford College volleyball team moved to a perfect 2-0 on the young season, taking down Piedmont University 3-1 (25-16, 22-25, 25-13, 26-24) in the first game of the Averett University Invite on Friday afternoon.
The Quakers were quick to start the contest, opening an easy 6-2 lead in the first set. The Lions able to battle back to within one until their comeback was undone by a swallowed up by a sea of errors.
Piedmont was able to halt GC's momentum in the second set, never trailing despite being tied at 17-17 at one point.
Guilford rebounded back in the third set as it was all gas, cruising to a 25-13 win. The largest lead of the set was eight points (18-10).
The fourth and final set was the most competitive of the day, seeing the score knotted 12 times, with the last being at 24-24. It was a pair of kills by Vanessa Johnson and Hannah Stout that sealed the deal.
GC put on an offensive showcase, posting 38 kills, a team-best 10 of which belonged to Adison Needham. Stout and Johnson claimed six kills apiece.
Another big part of the offense, Maddi Page recorded 30 assists. The freshman also owned three service aces, two kills and 10 digs.
It was Avery Lemons who led the way in aces, putting up four to go along with her six digs and one kill.
On the defensive side of the ball, Johnson owned a team-best 2 block assists, while Needham, Stout, Lemons, Devyn Norman and Cam Blankenship each went up for one.
Lydia Saunders was second-best in digs with nine.
Guilford returns to action at 11 a.m. tomorrow as it takes on North Carolina Wesleyan in its second matchup of the Averett University Invite. It will then take on hosting Averett at 5 p.m.
