Box Score 2 GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 2021 Guilford baseball team came to an end with a doubleheader setback to Virginia Wesleyan, who came through with wins of 14-8 and 11-7 on Saturday, May 1st at McBane Field.
GAME 1: VIRGINIA WESLEYAN 14, GUILFORD 8
Virginia Wesleyan wrapped up the opening game of the doubleheader with 24 hits, scoring multiple runs in five innings, including a four-run ninth inning.
Eight hitters in the Marlins lineup had multiple hits, including Tyriq Campbell, who was 5-of-5 from the plate with two RBI and three runs. Virginia Wesleyan accounted for five extra-base hits, including a pair of doubles against Matt Dagostino.
Trailing 7-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, Guilford stormed back to score seven runs and bring the game to a deadlock. The big hit came from Saunders Joplin, who delivered a three-RBI double that scored the trio of Austin Bailey, Ty Clark and Sam Mennitt.
Virginia Wesleyan answered with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh while keeping the Guilford lineup silenced. Leading 10-7 entering the ninth, the Marlins tallied four runs on three hits in the top of the ninth. Guilford answered with a single in the bottom of the frame by Isaiah Hairston, scoring Bailey in the process, to make for the six-run difference.
Guilford had three hitters with two hits in the contest, including Ty Clark, Austin Bailey and Logan King. The Quakers tallied 11 hits, including a pair of doubles by Joplin and Bailey.
GAME 2: VIRGINIA WESLEYAN 11, GUILFORD 7
Saunders Joplin was again an instrumental figure in the Guilford lineup, finished 4-for-4 from the plate with two RBI, two runs and home run. He was one of five Quaker hitters with multiple hits including Sam Mennitt, Ellis Stokes, Tanner Hobbs and Logan King.
Guilford also tallied five doubles in the game, all from different sources.
Facing a 2-0 deficit entering the bottom of the first, Hairston delivered the first Guilford double of the afternoon scoring Stokes. Tanner Hobbs followed with a single that plated Hairston, knotting the game at two-all.
With three runners on, two by virtue of a single in the top of the second, Jake Ness drove a grand slam over the wall to give the Marlins a 6-2 lead.
The Quakers responded by scoring five runs between the third and fifth innings, taking advantage of a two-run home run by Joplin in the bottom of the third. Sumner also single in the third to plate Carter Davis for the fifth Guilford run.
The tying run scored on a passed ball that brought Joplin home from third and the Quakers assumed the 7-6 advantage on a single from Stokes that brought home Hayes Henderson.
The Marlins scored five runs between the sixth and eight innings, highlighted by a double from Miles Christ in the sixth and a solo home run by Matt Sinko in the seventh, to grab the 11-7 lead.
