Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Three players tallied eight kills for Virginia Wesleyan, who capped a 3-0 victory over Guilford by scores of 25-20, 25-12, 25-21 in the season finale for the Quakers when the two teams clashed in ODAC volleyball action on Sunday, April 25th in Virginia Beach, Va.
The Marlins, who improved to 11-4 overall and 9-2 in ODAC action, were led offensively by the trio of Sydney Collins, Greta Coss and Abigail Mahoney, who finished with eight kills apiece. Defenisvely, Cara Caruso came through with 12 digs, while Grace Sweers added nine.
Guilford (1-9, 0-9 ODAC) was led by Adison Needham, who tallied seven kills. Teammate Hannah Stout added five while the tandem of Kaitlyn Kelley and Amanda Rabey contributed three each. Cydney Scott anchored the back row with 11 digs while Carson added 10 digs to go along with a match-high 19 assists. Rabey also recorded two blocks in her final game as a Quaker.
Separated by just one point, 9-8, following a kill by Stout, Virginia Wesleyan answered with a 10-7 run to assume the 19-15 lead on a slam by Morgan Ludovici. Two kills by Collins down the stretch combined with three attack errors allowed the Marlins to complete the 25-20 opening set win.
The two teams battled to a four-all deadlock in the second set, but it was a 14-5 run by the Marlins that proved to be the difference. With Caruso in serve, Virginia Wesleyan picked up five points, to take the 18-9 lead. Guilford reached double figures on a service error, but managed just two point down the stretch, as the Marlins assume the 2-0 lead.
An inspired Quaker team bolted out to an 11-4 lead early in the third set, keyed by kills from Evans, Rabey and Stout. Virginia Wesleyan answered the challenge, again with Caruso in serve, to outscore Guilford 14-4 and assume a late 18-15 advantage. The Quakers converted kills by Collins and Needham down the stretch, but it was consecutive kills by Kelley and Collins that allowed the Marlins to complete the sweep with a four-point victory.
