Ferrum Emerges With 17-10 Win in Baseball Clash

FERRUM, Va. – Guilford baseball built a 7-1 through the top of the fourth inning, but it was 16 runs over the final 5.5 innings by host Ferrum that allowed the Panthers to earn a 17-10 win at home in ODAC baseball action on Tuesday evening.

Guilford (1-12, 1-12 ODAC) put four runs on the board in the top of the second, when Ty Clark scored on a single to left field by Ryan Croom. Four batters later, with the base pads loaded with Quakers, Austin Bailey drove a double down the left field line to extend the Guilford lead to 4-1.

The lead grew to 6-1 in the top of the third as Guilford tacked on two runs. The first came when Isaiah Hairston scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Croom reached first on an error at short, which allowed Chase Wade to advance home.

Hairston pushed the Guilford advantage to 7-1 on a grounder to short that brought Larry McMillian II to the plate. Ferrum retaliated with a five-run fourth, pulling to within one, highlighted by a two-RBI single to left field.

The Panthers (7-18, 4-12 ODAC) bats remained hot in the fifth, again scoring five runs, highlighted by bases-clearing triple to right field by Ozzie Torres that brought both Sebastian Dexter and Rufus Hurdle homeward as Ferrum built an 11-7 lead.

Wade recorded a triple of his own in the top of the seventh for the Quakers, slicing the lead to 11-8 after scoring Clark from second. However, Ferrum had a three-run eighth to extend its lead to 14-8, scoring two runs on a home run over the left field wall by Matt Yarbrough.

Ferrum tacked on three more runs in the eighth, stretching its lead to nine, 17-8. Guilford scored its final two runs in the ninth, the first coming when Bailey scored on a throwing error by the shortstop. Wade followed with a single to first, scoring Clark, to push Guilford into double figures.

Bailey was one of three Quakers with multiple hits in the game with Guilford recording 11 hits. Bailey, who finished 4-of-5 from the plate, was responsible for three RBI, one run and a double. Clark, the No. 5 hitter in the Guilford lineup, was 2-for-5 from the plate with three runs. Wade was also responsible for multiple hits (2-for-5), closing with two RBI a run scored and a triple.

Ferrum notched 17 hits with eight players in the lineup recording at least one hit. Six of those Panther sluggers had multi-hit games.

Dylan King (0-1) took the loss for Guilford after allowing seven runs, six hits and recording three strikeouts over three innings. Carlton Redd (2-5) claimed the win for the Panthers, working seven innings, allowing nine hits, eight runs, two walks while fanning three Quaker batters.

The two teams will also play on Wednesday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C., with the game set for 3 p.m.
