DANVILLE, Va. -- The Guilford College men's basketball claimed its second victory of the season as it took down Averett University 74-61 on the road Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Guilford claimed an early 10-0 lead to start the contest, and continued to be strong as it gaped out to a 25-7 advantage at the midway mark of the first half.

A nine point streak by the hosting Averett that covered four minutes was halted by a Joah Logan made free throw to make it 26-14.

A trio of Cougar three-pointers forced a Quaker timeout at 3:49 as they saw their lead cut to five, 28-23.

Coming out of the break, Tyler Dearman put up five points off two layups and a free throw to make it 33-23. AU was able to post one more bucket as time ran out on the stanza, making it an eight point game (33-25).

After three minutes of play in the second half Guilford had extended its lead to 13 on a pair of Liam Ward free throws. Averett answered with a layup of their own.

Ward took it upon himself to make a statement, responding with a dunk 10 seconds later to make it 42-29.

With 10 minutes remaining in the competition, GC owned a 58-41 lead.

After nearly one minute without a bucket Guilford called a timeout at 7:51. Coming out of the pause in play, rookie Caleb Farrish went up for a dunk to make it 62-44.

It was two free throws by Jaylen Gore that gave the Quakes a 20-point advantage, 64-44.

Despite an attempt at a rally by the Cougars, GC was able to maintain at least a 10 point lead throughout to come away with a 74-61 win.
COMPARING NUMBERS

Guilford won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding Averett 34-25.

GC also proved to be strong from the field as it shot 50.9 percent compared to AU's mark of 41.2.

While it appeared the Cougars couldn't miss from beyond the arc, the Quakes were still stronger, shooting 41.7 percent compared to the hosts' 38.5 percent.
TOP PERFORMING QUAKERS

Dominating the competition was Liam Ward with his double-double. Ward put up team-bests in points and rebounds, with marks of 31 and 11 respectively. The senior also recorded three steals, one block and one assist. He was 14-for-21 from the field, 1-for-2 from three and a perfect 2-for-2 on free throws.

Also strong on offense was Tyler Dearman with his 18 points. Dearman also added five rebounds, three assists and one steal.

Also posting double digits in scoring, Jaylen Gore put up 11 points to go with his four assists, and one rebound. Gore was near perfect shooting, 4-4 from the floor, 1-for-1 on the three-point attempt, and 3-for-4 from the charity stripe.

Strong on the boards, Julius Burch went up for five rebounds. Burch also pitched in four points, one assist and one steal.
