GREENSBORO, N.C.. -- The Guilford College men's basketball team earned its first win of the season as it took down crosstown foe Greensboro College, 57-51 on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Despite going up 1-0 on a Liam Ward made free throw, hosting Greensboro College quickly took control and gapped out to a 14-7 lead at 12:41.

This ignited a fire under the Quakers as Ward put up eight straight points to put his squad up 18-16 at 4:52 on a big dunk.

With 9.8 seconds remaining in the half, Jaylen Gore went to the free throw line, but was unable to sink it. Guilford trailed 24:22 heading into halftime.

The second half proved to be eventful, as the pair traded points in the early goings, but mostly in favor of the hosts as they were putting up three-pointers compared to Guilford's twos.

Battling back, Guilford put up six-straight points to trail by only four, 40-36 with 12:52 left in the contest.

An answer from the Pride makes it 43-38, but Caleb Farrish comes up big with a layup and made free throw on a shooting foul to make it 43-41.

Ward carries the momentum as he evens the score at 43 after three minutes with no scoring. He then put the Quakers up 45-43 on a jumper.

A pair of Joah Logan free throws at 4:42 gives Guilford a lead it would not relinquish, 47-46.

Ward added five points on a jumper and three-pointer for a 52-46 lead, which eventually forced a Greensboro timeout with 1:01 on the clock.

With 20.4 seconds remaining, Julius Burch found a rogue ball in the paint, which allowed Guilford to use a timeout and advance the ball to its offensive zone.

The Quakes came away with a 57-51 victory over Greensboro after allowing it to post a layup in the final seven seconds to narrow the point margin.
COMPARING NUMBERS

The Quakers shot 42 percent from the field while the hosting pride was 30.9 percent on the two-point attempt.

Guilford also out-rebounded the opposition 33-30.

Winning the battle of the GCs, Guilford was strong on the second chance attempt, posting 11 points to Greensboro's 4.
TOP PERFORMING QUAKERS

Absolutely dominating the offensive zone, Liam Ward posted a team-best 25 points. Tonight's performance marked the third time this season that Ward posted more than 20 points in a contest.

Leading Guilford off the boards was Julius Burch with his 14 rebounds. Burch added six points and two steals in the win.

Second in scoring, Joah Logan put up 13 points, perfected from the charity stripe, 6-6. Logan also had two steals and one block.

Off the bench, Caleb Farrish recorded seven points and two rebounds. Farrish was perfect on the attempt, 3-for-3 from the field and 1-for-1 on the free throw.

Guilford will see a little bit of a break before it is scheduled to travel to Averett for a 5 p.m. contest on Tuesday.
