GREENSBORO, N.C. – Mesa Martorell won in singles and doubles to help Guilford College's men's tennis team to an 8-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over visiting Emory & Henry College on a windy Saturday afternoon.
The Quakers (3-6, 3-2 ODAC) captured their third straight victory. Emory & Henry falls to 1-8 (0-4 ODAC).
Martorell teamed with Levi Bruff for a convincing 8-0 third-doubles win over the Wasps' James Watson-Dare and James Carter. Martorell needed three sets to dispose of Emory & Henry's Kamil Aliev, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 and collect his second win of the day.
With a league match at Washington and Lee University Sunday, the Quakers rested some of their regulars and saw the reserves make big contributions. John Brvenik, Guilford's usual sixth-singles player, moved up to fourth and claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win over Andrew McClung. Mark Wasiliewski (5th singles) and Ben Levin (6th singles) made their varsity dual match debuts Saturday and turned in 6-0, 6-0 victories.
Emory & Henry's lone point came a first singles where John Dalton Ferguson defeated Guilford's Erik Meiler, 6-0, 6-4.
Coach Dave McCain's Quakers visit Washington and Lee Sunday at 12 noon.
