GREENSBORO, N.C. – Matt Kessler pulled out a 6-2, 7-6 (10-8) win at second singles to clinch Roanoke College's 5-4 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's tennis triumph at Guilford College Sunday.
The Maroons improve to 7-6 (6-2 ODAC). Guilford drops to 4-9 (4-5 ODAC) with the loss.
Kessler paired with Jacob Morris for a narrow first-doubles victory over the Quakers' Erik Meiler and Aaron Smedley. They needed a tiebreaker for a 9-8 (8-1) win. Holden Branham and Joey Ross edged the Quakers' Chasen Chacon and Graham Pearson, 8-5, for the Maroons' second doubles point at number-two doubles.
Guilford's Levi Bruff and Mesa Martorell remained unbeaten in league play at third doubles with an 8-3 win over Roanoke's Jose Alvarado and Chris Teeple.
Ross scored a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 first-singles win over Meiler for his second triumph of the day. Morris' 6-4, 6-0 victory over Mason Church at third singles marked his second win of the afternoon.
Bruff stopped Alvarado at fifth singles, 6-4, 6-0, and was Guilford's lone two-time winner. Senior John Brvenik went three sets for a 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (10-3) win over Teeple at sixth singles. Guilford's Aaron Smedley edged Branham, 6-4, 7-5, at fourth singles.
Coach Dave McCain's Quakers close out the regular season an April 24 contest with league-rival Hampden-Sydney College at 3:00 p.m. on Guilford's McMichael Centennial Class Courts.
